Jan Studio: Designing Through Connection
Jan Studio is a multidisciplinary design practice guided by a simple philosophy: to create connection. Rooted in context and locality, the studio begins every project with a deep respect for what exists, evolving each space, product, or concept into something both inevitable and entirely new. Known for merging practical sensibilities with timeless design, Jan Studio delivers work that is grounded yet elevated, effortless yet intentional. Founded by Marjan Milovanovic, a Savannah College of Art and Design BFA graduate, the studio is defined by her ability to build identity within any set of parameters. Rather than rely on a signature look, Marjan approaches each project with logic, emotion, and purpose, asking what makes the most sense for the space, the client, and the moment to achieve the best possible outcome within the budget, limitations, and goals.

Recently, Marjan completed the full renovation of a Spanish-inspired single-family home in Miami. Stripped back to its bones and thoughtfully reimagined, the home reflects a coastal-transitional spirit with a distinct Miami flair. Featuring a muted coastal palette: soft whites, sandy tones, and weathered woods is layered with texture and warmth, creating a dialogue between the indoors and lush outdoors. At the heart of the home sits a grand island, anchoring an open, ready-to-host space that embodies the laid-back Miami lifestyle, think bossa nova playing in the background and a fresh-squeezed mojito in hand.

Lighting played a big role in shaping the home’s mood and rhythm. Throughout, Tala Core Recessed Spotlights were selected for their dimmable, overall ambient light, a thoughtful contrast to their name. Installed in a nontraditional grid with deliberate spacing, the fixtures provide both practical illumination that serves as task lighting and a diffused light for evening entertaining. The clean, understated lighting forms a calming backdrop for the home’s statement fixtures. The result is a fluid shift from bright and functional to soft and loungey.

As Marjan describes “Lighting is a subconscious design decision. Lighting has far more of an effect on you than any other decision that you will ever make in a space. It’s the element that sets the emotional temperature of a space, the quiet layer that influences everything else without demanding attention.”
